Happenings

October - December 2009

In the fall we were very busy. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month we were able to donate money to Susan B Komen Breast Cancer Walk on behalf of Pam Littler. The event raised almost $20,000.00. We also donated funds to the Deanna M McHarris Memorial Fund at Upstate Medical University Foundation. This is a program that helps women who might need a mammogram get one. This program supports women in Oneida and Madison Counties .

In August our Unit co-sponsored a Blood Drive for the community of Sylvan Beach and surrounding areas. In October we donated funds to the local American Red Cross Rome Area Chapter.

October was also Fire Prevention Month. Our unit made a donation to the North Bay Fire Department, McConnellsville Fire Department, Sylvan Beach Fire Department and Vienna Fire Department. Since our membership resides in all four fire districts we felt that our support was important.

Trees for Troops this program allows people to purchase a Christmas Tree for $25 which will be given to military families both overseas and in the United States . Romagnoli's Christmas Tree Farm is one business that is supporting this

program. For more information you can go to www.treesfortroops.org . The Legion, SAL and Auxiliary sponsored twelve trees and we also included a holiday card that accompanied each tree.

In conjunction with the Sylvan Beach Fire Department, the Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary co-sponsored the annual community children's Halloween Party. Thank you to all members who donated candy for this event.

November was Food Pantry month. We collected 52 lbs of food which was donated to the Camden Food Pantry. We also donated 14 $20 gift cards to the Camden P&C which were purchased from tip money from last year's fish fries. We are also making a monetary donation to Cluster 13 in Camden . Cluster 13 is a non-profit organization that assisted two of our Auxiliary members this past summer with major home repairs.

Community Service , chairwoman, Debbie Mantz has placed 6 baskets at the Rome Hematology/Oncology Center in Rome . These baskets include: magazines, crossword puzzle books, hand held games, coloring books & crayons, pencils, hand sanitizing lotions, and other time passing items. We are hoping that this program will benefit adult individuals who have to have chemotherapy. If you have any of the mentioned items that you would like to donate please contact Debbie Mantz. She can be reached at 245-2748. We also have a collection basket at the post.

This holiday season the Auxiliary sponsored a family from North Bay Elementary School . The response to help was incredible and this family had a wonderful holiday. We are also filled their pantry with numerous items.

Membership , chairwoman, Donna Hulser reported that we have 136 members paid for 2010. Twenty-two members are new to our unit. Our quota is 150 members. Currently we have about 25 members who haven't renewed their dues. Please renew your dues today as our unit could be in contention for a department and/or national award if we reach or exceed 100% before the end of the year. Also be prepared to show your membership card when you visit the post.

Children & Youth , chairwoman, Joanne Hewiit has announced that our annual Children's Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December 20 th from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. This year we had 41 children signed up. Santa arrived via Fire Truck and the kids really enjoyed their time at Post 1153.

Auxiliary Emergency Fund , chairwoman Sue Secor assisted a member to apply for a one time grant for hardship. The national headquarters did help out this member. Our unit assisted three members who were in need of some financial assistance for hardship.

Our next meeting will be February 1st at 6:30pm.

Please plan on attending.

............ an amazing day for Post 1153.

With the support and generosity of all our membership we were able to make one family have a wonderful holiday season.

North Bay Elementary staff was amazed at the items we brought.  Bikes and toboggan were stored in another office since we filled the Principal's office with all the boxes we brought.

Thank you to everyone who made this happen.

MaryAnn
